what we do

WHAT WE DO

We assist local news organizations through a combination of direct grants, guidance from contractors for digital and business services, a news content exchange and by addressing tackling statewide issues that affect all media such as preserving and expanding public notices.

Public Notices

Many state, local, private and federal entities are required to publish public notices in the local newspaper of record. This basic democratic purpose is eroding as many governments in Alaska and around the national are moving to limit public noticing in favor of government-run websites. Public notices are an essential way of sharing information about government actions with the people who will be impacted by these activities. To not only preserve but to enhance the distribution of public notices, the Alaska News Coalition is working to create a website that will compile all of the public notices placed in newspapers across the state, putting all of the notices in a single, easily searchable database for the public — at no additional cost to advertisers.

Digital Transformation

ANC is assisting traditional newspapers transition to, and upgrade, digital formats that attract younger readers and make the local news more accessible to a wider audience. These activities include upgrading content management systems, facilitating newsletters, and identifying consultants and experts who can assist with technical issues and the distribution of local news digitally.

Facilitating Collaborations

Alaskans know how to work together in tough times. ANC is fostering that same spirit of collaboration as news organizations face economic challenges. We are creating a content management system for story and image sharing and exploring other potential cost sharing opportunities.
