our mission

Our Mission

Local newspapers are vital in Alaska, where many communities are remote, with limited access to credible news and information. The Alaska News Coalition was formed to ensure the economic sustainability of the state’s newsrooms. A strong and vibrant press not only puts national issues into local context, but also engages and connects neighbors over important issues such as education, health care, the environment and social welfare. The underlying mission of the Alaska News Coalition is to keep local news organizations thriving so that Alaska’s communities will remain engaged and informed.

Keeping Alaska CONNECTED

Alaska is a land of superlatives, the tallest mountains, the longest coastline, the most wildlife, the largest wilderness, the most extreme temperatures. The uniqueness of Alaska is at the heart of its rural communities. Separated by wide expanses, many remote communities in Alaska are accessible only by boat or plane.

The media ecosystem is just as unique. Local news outlets are geographically isolated and face challenges ranging from importing enough paper and ink, to hiring and keeping staff through the long, dark winters.

Covering the news in a remote community requires cultural sensitivity as well as a deep understanding of history and place.

Supporting news in rural Alaska is critically important as it strengthens each community’s ability to stay informed and engaged locally while remaining connected to the outside world.
